Teach For America- Charlotte has a partnership with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) where corps members have the option to enroll in a certification program. UNCC offers a graduate certificate in teaching (to earn your full teacher license) and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, where you can earn a master's degree in addition to your teaching license during your two year commitment. This option is a great opportunity to finish your Teach For America commitment with deeper pedagogical knowledge and an education degree.

 

The number of hours you will need to pass in order to complete these programs will depend upon your undergraduate coursework and how well it aligns with your classroom placement. No matter which program you choose to enroll in, you will be paired with a personal advisor who will work with you to determine the best path to complete the program. The full cost to acquire a Graduate Certificate/full licensure or the MAT will vary by corps members' teaching assignment (elementary or secondary) and academic background. Corps members who acquire course credits that transfer into UNCC can expect to pay less. Based on last year's tuition, the graduate certificate program will be $3,000-5,000 and the master's program will be $8,050-10,200. Corps members will be considered NC residents and will be expected to pay for coursework either out-of-pocket or by applying for grants and loans.

 

Every year, Teach For America applies for a grant from AmeriCorps which gives corps members an AmeriCorps Education Award at the end of each of their two years. This grant would provide $5,500 at the end of each year of service for each corps member that could be used to repay UNCC loans that qualify. However, it is not guaranteed yet that we will be able to enroll corps members in this program.
